'Liquor bribe', 'threats', 'anti-women' barb: AAP-BJP fight on

The BJP and the AAP engaged in a fierce war of words on Saturday, summarising the mood of an acrimonious election campaign that was marred by name-calling and poignant barbs targeted at rival camps.

As Delhi voted on a bright, sunny day, leaders from the BJP and AAP — the frontrunners — traded charges.

First off the blocks was AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. The former Delhi chief minister alleged that a certain party distributed cash and liquor a night before polling.

"Last night liquor and money were distributed. People of Delhi know which party did this… Don't vote for them," Kejriwal said without naming any party. "People want freedom from corruption, bribery, and I am hopeful they will vote accordingly."

Minutes later, he tweeted, "BJP candidate from Mangolpuri arrested for carrying liquor bottles in his car? Shudn't his candidature be cancelled? (sic)".

Next, it was the turn of BJP's chief ministerial candidate, Kiran Bedi.

Bedi, 65, alleged AAP workers were threatening people against voting for the BJP in Krishna Nagar, her constituency and a saffron party stronghold.

She reportedly showed journalists a video of a woman purportedly making such allegations.

"AAP is buying voters for Rs 300. Young girls are saying they were offered money and free food. The poor are being used. Women are being threatened. If you have the courage to show the video, please do so and let people know the truth," NDTV quoted Bedi as saying.

Later in the day, the AAP filed a complaint to the Election Commission against Bedi for violating the model code of conduct in Krishna Nagar by holding 'pad yatra (rally)' and asking for votes, according to ANI.

The next big controversy of the day erupted after the BJP's New Delhi candidate, Nupur Sharma, accused AAP workers of roughing up her sister near a booth in Sangli.

"AAP is an anti-women party," Sharma, who is contesting against Kejriwal from the prestigious seat, said.

Reacting to the allegations, AAP leader Atishi Marlena said, "If anyone has misbehaved with Nupur Sharma, she must file a complaint. We will also cooperate if she can give details of that person."
