The area, dominated by the Meo community, offers few employment opportunities for the youth who have been forced to work as truck drivers.

Unemployment has led to an increase in crime with the area becoming a hub for stolen vehicles.

"The gangs from Mewat operate in Gurgaon, Faridabad and on the Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Mathura highways," a Haryana IPS officer, posted in Gurgaon, said.

Government initiatives have failed to make a difference with its employees unwilling to work in the area often referred to as kala pani in official circles.
