The incident was reported from the office of Anil Bhardwaj, Congress MLA from Trinagar, located in Pitampura’s Chandralok area around 11.20 am. The man has been arrested.Bhardwaj was not present when the shots were fired, police said.

“We arrested the accused, who was later identified as one Ravinder Yadav, a stone-crusher residing at Shakurpur village, who also claims to be a local Congress worker,” said P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police (northwest).

“The weapon was later found to be a toy pistol from which three shots were fired. No one was injured,” he added.

According to the police, the episode unfolded when Yadav reached the MLA’s office around 11 am and began enquiring about him. Police said there were around 20 local party workers at the office all of whom told Yadav that the MLA was away. Bharadwaj is apparently available at that office every Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

“When he was told to come back later, Yadav, who was reeking of alcohol, burst into a string of abuses,” said another officer.

“That is when the other workers grabbed him and took him outside as he was creating a scene. Yadav then took out a pistol, pointed it at the sky and started firing,” the officer said.

The workers overpowered him and informed the police, which sent him to a government hospital for a medical examination. “The examination confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested for attempt to murder and under the Arms Act,” DCP Karunakaran said.

Yadav later told police that he had fired in the air because the MLA was not taking his calls and that he hadn’t intended to hurt anyone.
