Man kills girlfriend’s mother, then burns self and lover

It was around 11.30 am that Raj Kumar, 32, went to meet his girlfriend, Soni, 21, at her house and ended up stabbing her mother Baby, 40, before setting himself and Soni on fire.

Raj had wanted to marry Soni, but Baby was against it as Raj was already married and had two sons.

Raj and Soni had apparently been in an relationship for the last 18 months and Raj had approached Soni’s family six months ago with a proposal to marry her. Baby had at that time found out that Raj was already married and had turned down his proposal.

Determined to marry Soni, Raj had approached her family once again a fortnight ago and had pleaded his case, but was turned down again by Baby. On Monday, Raj went to Soni’s Hari Nagar residence with a knife and kerosene oil in his Maruti Zen car.

Police sources said Raj regularly used to go to Soni’s house to meet her and this used to annoy Baby. “On Monday, when Raj arrived at the house, Baby confronted him and told him that Soni was not at home. At this, Raj took out his knife and stabbed Baby,” a police officer said.He then set Soni and himself on fire.

It was when neighbours saw smoke billowing out of the house that they informed the police.

Soni, Raj and Baby were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead. The three bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Raj Kumar had earlier been arrested in an extortion case. Soni had recently taken the class 12 board exams and her father, who is working in a garment factory, was not at the house when the incident happened.

A case has been registered at Badarpur police station.
