According to the police, Durgesh Chauhan, who works at a marriage bureau in northwest Delhi’s Pitampura area, resorted to the crime to pay off a debt of Rs 20,000 that he owed his boss.
“He is a native of Madhya Pradesh and had borrowed some money from his boss, Arun Aggarwal, before going to his village for a holiday. When his expenses shot-up during the sojourn, he decided to pay off his debt by selling his child,” said a senior police officer.
According to the police, when Chauhan told his boss about the plan, he agreed to the arrangement and also helped in arranging the services of a midwife, identified as Aarti, to help with the delivery at his residence.
A female undercover police officer posed as the midwife as soon as the police got wind of Chauhan’s plan.
Chauhan walked right into their trap and was arrested from the Birla Mandir.
