Maruti plans its first goods carrier

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd on Saturday said it will revive its over three-decade-old project in India and launch a small commercial vehicle on the lines of the Tata Ace in the next two years.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd on Saturday said it will revive its over three-decade-old project in India and launch a small commercial vehicle on the lines of the Tata Ace in the next two years. This is the first time the company that makes every second car in the country is diversifying from its core business.

“In our board meeting two days back, we had decided to launch a small goods carrier on the lines of the Suzuki Carry within the next two years,” said RC Bhargava, chairman, MSIL. “It will have both diesel as well as CNG options. Work on it has already started.”

The company had planned to launch the Carry in India alongwith the M800 and Omni van back in 1982. The project, however, did not take off as the company recieved only 2,000 bookings for the vehicle.
