Maternal mortality rate dips

The risk of death among pregnant women or maternal mortality rate (MMR) in the country has come down to 212 per lakh live births between 2007 and 2009 as compared to 254 per lakh live births between 2004 and 2006.

The registrar general of India states the decline has been significant in empowered action group states and Assam from 375 to 308. Among the southern states, the decline has been from 149 to 127. The empowered states are Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Rajasthan and UP.
