The building, which has been a landmark ever since it was constructed in 1865, has developed cracks and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to repair and paint it, so that it can house offices again.

The structure has been chosen as the headquarters for the proposed North Delhi Corporation, which will be formed in April.

RK Srivastava, secretary in the urban development ministry of Delhi government, who has been appointed as the director of local bodies, had written to the civic body, asking it to carry out necessary repair work in Town Hall immediately so that it is suitable to house the headquarters.

MCD officials said a team has already started visiting Town Hall and making a list of the works that are needed to be carried out such as air-conditioning and re-carpeting.

Some columns and staircases have also started deteriorating and need immediate repair.

“Once the list is prepared, a budget will be finalised and work will begin,” said a senior MCD official.
