MCD to launch household waste collection experiment

Soon the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will provide twin dustbins to every household in the city to ensure waste segregation is done at the doorstep. But this will come at a cost. People would have to pay a yet-to-be-decided nominal charge for obtaining these dustbins. The garbage collected in these dustbins—bio-degradable and non-bio degradable—would be picked up by a private firm from every household on a daily basis and then taken to processing plants for recycling or compost production.

"We want people to connect to this plan and providing standard dustbins is a step in that direction, " said Vijendra Gupta, chairman, standing committee, MCD.

The MCD has claimed the scheme will be implemented from March onwards.

"We will start with providing these dustbins to every household in Rohini and Civil Lines zone, which means nearly 16 lakh dustbins," added Gupta. The plan would extendeddepending on the success of these two zones and will be applicable to houses in all unauthorised colonies too.

Six international firms have shown an interest in the scheme. Among the agencies are joint venture firms involving companies from France, Brazil, Sri Lanka and Singapore.
