Metro to link your favourite markets on a single line

Now, you won’t have to think twice before going on a shopping spree. For, the Delhi Metro will soon connect four of the Capital’s most popular markets — Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar — on a single line.

This will happen by 2016, when Delhi Metro’s longest corridor, Mukundpur to Shiv Vihar, will become operational.

“By 2016, four major shopping destinations of the city will have dedicated Metro stations connecting them. The INA and Lajpat Nagar Metro stations will be converted into interchange stations to further boost connectivity to these markets. All these stations will be built within 20-100 metres of the markets,” said Anuj Dayal, chief spokesperson of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

A study by DMRC has estimated that once the line opens, about two lakh shoppers from across the city will use the Metro to get to these markets daily.

According to the study, 15,000 shoppers will use the Sarojini Nagar station to go to Sarojini Nagar market, 1,29,881 shoppers will use INA interchange station to go to INA market and Delhi Haat, 8,317 shoppers will use South Extension Metro station to go to South Extension market and Ansal Plaza, and 54,454 shoppers will use Lajpat Nagar interchange Metro station to go to Lajpat Nagar market.

“Metro connectivity will ease the traffic situation and parking woes,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
