Plan to turn Delhi’s Bijwasan, Shakurbasti railway stations into mega terminals

Bijwasan is also being developed into the first transit interchange facility in the south-western part of the Capital, integrated with other modes of mass transit.
Located near the Indira Gandhi International Airport, the redeveloped Bijawasan station will be connected with upcoming an inter-state bus terminal and a metro station.
“Bijwasan is a small peripheral station now. After modernisation, it will transform into a major hub. In case of Shakurbasti, some important trains are already operating from it. Several other trains will start originating and terminating at the station once the new terminal opens,” said Arun Arora, divisional railway manager (Delhi).
About 500 passenger trains operate from the four major railway stations —New Delhi, Old Delhi, Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar. Railway officials said the daily average passenger load at these stations is more than a million.

Once commissioned, the modernised transit hubs, Bijawasan and Shakur Basti, will cater to trains to Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana--on the lines of Anand Vihar where majority of east-bound trains orginate, official said.
Currently, Bijwasan station, on the Mehrauli-Najafgarh road, serves only local trains. The Northern Railway plans to operate 28 trains from the revamped Bijwasan station.
According to the detailed project report, this exclusive transit interchange facility will save time and cost for users, besides providing modern infrastructure with facilities for the convenience of commuters.
Officials said commercial development near the station will give rise to facilities such as hotels, retail and office spaces, commercial complexes, markets, etc .
“This project will have huge economic benefits in terms of increased employment, reduced environmental pollution and overall improvement in the living standards in the catchment area of the project,” a senior Northern Railway official said.
Officials said bid applications are likely to be opened in March.
Shakurbasti station modernisation
A new coaching terminal is being developed at Shakurbasti on the Rohtak Road direction. The existing is also being augmented and operational facilities are being increased.
“Three new platforms are being added to the existing three. Work is at an advanced stage of construction. A new station building along with a new entry and circulating area has been constructed and commissioned in the existing set-up. A new foot overbridge with ramps for differently bled persons is being constructed to connect all platforms. Work 90% complete,” a senior official said.
But encroachments are the biggest impediments. “The department had attempted to remove these illegal encroachments on railway land in December 2015 but the political hue and cry and court cases came in way,” an official said.

14 pairs of trains planned for origination/ termination
Assuming 90% occupancy, these trains will translate to 88,000 passengers per day
Station capacity estimated at around 1,38,000 passengers in 2053
As per consultant’s report, property development at Bijwasan will add about 1000 passenger car units (PCUs) per day.
Station capacity planned for 44 trains of 26 coaches each for maintenance
Extension of Metro line from Sector-21 to IFFCO Chowk Gurgaon is at proposal stage. Once commissioned, the extension will result in daily boarding trips of about 69,103 in 2021.
Proposed ISBT: Total demand in 2030 projected at 1,90,500 passengers.
