Monsoon active in North India

Rains visited most parts of north India today, including Delhi, which was drenched for the second consecutive day, while a low pressure loomed large over Gangetic West Bengal, promising more rains in the region.

In the national capital, the maximum and minimum temperatures hovered between 27 and 33 degree Celcius, the MeT office said.

The city received a rainfall of 5 mm in the past 24 hours with the maximum humidity settled a little over the 90 per cent mark.

In West Bengal, the monsoon trough over the Gangetic belt turned into a low pressure with forecasts of isolated heavy rains in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura and adjoining areas of Jharkhand and north Orissa in the next few days, Regional Meteorological Centre director G C Debnath said.

Occasional isolated rains are also likely in Kolkata during the period, he said.

Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rains continued to batter most of the nine south Bengal districts where major rivers were already flowing above the danger level and inundating large areas of crop land and human habitation.

In Rajasthan, moderate to heavy rainfall activity was recorded at Udaipur divisions, at many places in Bharatpur, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Ajmer divisions and at a few places in Kota division, the local MeT Dept said.

Churu, Bikaner and Pilani received 3.6 mm, 1.8 mm and 1.1 mm of rainfall respectively.

Meanwhile, certain pockets in Punjab and Haryana received moderate rainfall.

Bhiwani received 5.5 mm of rains, Ludhiana recorded one mm rainfall. Amritsar was the hottest place in the plains with a high of 34 degree Celcius. Patiala's maximum was recorded at 33.4 degree Celcius, while Chandigarh settled at a high of 33.2 degree Celcius.
