To tide over NCR’s parking problem, civic authorities need to get their act together and implement some of their pending projects. Surface parking lots not only take up a lot of space, they involve haggling with parking attendants too.

Once multi-level parking projects, that have been under construction for the past many years, become operational, they will take the pressure off the surface parking lots. There are more than 30 multi-level parking projects under construction. For instance, NDMC’s Baba Kharak Singh and Sarojini Nagar nulti-level parking lots are set begin operations in June.

“Once these parking lots become operational, we will not allow people to park their vehicles inside the Sarojini Nagar market. This will provide more walking space too. Also, problems like motorists being overcharged or the lack of security to the vehicle will also be taken care of,” said a senior NDMC official.

Apart from this, civic agencies should also start putting up pay meters to ensure only a specific number of vehicles are parked inside a lot. Use of hand-held devices is another way of ensuring that people are not overcharged. This will also help in keeping a tab on parking mafia which has taken to printing its own parking slips to over-charge motorists.

Introducing uniform parking slips and computerised parking slips will also help keep a tab on over-charging.
