The sisters had disconnected themselves from the outside world and confined themselves to a room on the ground floor of their two-storey house, after going into severe depression.

Though the exact cause of the victims’ depression and their deplorable health condition is yet unknown, some neighbours who live close to their house said that the sisters went into depression after facing three major tragedies in their lives.

According to Roopwati, a neighbour who claims to be closest to the family, it was Mamta who first cut herself from the outside world. Mamta, according to her, was depressed after she got divorced from her husband in less than two years of her marriage.

“Mamta wanted to live with her husband but it was her mother Nirmala Devi, who was reluctant to let her live with him. She got another shock of her life when her father, Rajender Gupta, the only breadwinner of his family, died around eight years ago,” said Roopwati, adding that both the sisters are Class 12 pass out from Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in sector 8, Rohini.

Archana, another neighbour who was also junior to the victims in school, said that the prime reason for Mamta’s depression was a chain snatching incident that occurred around six years back. “Around six years ago, Mamta’s gold chain was snatched by a biker when she was out for an evening walk. For Mamta, that chain was a precious gift by her husband. After that incident, Mamta developed symptoms of irritability and confined herself to her own world. She used to abuse us whenever we tried to talk to her,” said Archana, adding that it was the sisters’ relatives who were helping them financially.

When asked about the reason for Nirja’s depression, the neighbours said that she was emotionally attached to Mamta and thus became a partner in her isolated world.

“They were never seen outside. We used to hear them screaming inside their house and could gather little information from Mamta’s son Shubham who came to play with the children,” Archana said.

The neighbours said that their mother had also stopped coming out of the house.
