The system has been designed by the Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMMTS). It was demonstrated before the Delhi Police on Monday near terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
"The system worked efficiently even during the night. It is a part of the proposed intelligent traffic system, which may be put in place at some locations within a couple of months in a bid to restrict over speeding by vehicles, which cause maximum road accidents during night hours on city roads," Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic), said.
He said the police are now working out the modalities to install the system at some strategic locations as the pilot project.
Some of the accident prone roads where the system would be installed are: NH 1, NH 2, NH 8, Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Mathura Road, August Kranti Marg, DND Flyway, Indraprastha Marg and Salimgarh Bypass.
"This system will also help in identifying the repeated
violators. Such vehicles should be impounded and the licence of such drivers be temporarily suspended," demanded KK Kapila, chairman of the Geneva-based International Road Federation.
