Onion: Retail prices move south as supply increases

Delhi received a good 1,048 tonnes of onions on Saturday.

"The wholesale rates ranged between R7.50 per kg to R35 per kg (best quality)," said Brahma Yadav, chairman, Delhi Agriculture Marketing Board.

"The increased availability of onions leads to lower rates at wholesale market. This in turn benefits the consumer. Increased arrivals are expected to bring down retail costs from Sunday," said a retail trader.

Arrivals on Friday were 860 tonnes and the wholesale prices ranged between R17.50 per kg to R42.50 per kg (best quality).

Nafed counters sell onions at R35 per kg while that at Mother Dairy's Safal and Kendriya Bhandar, the subsidised onions are available at R39 per kg.

However, private retail prices continued to hover around R50 to R60 per kg till Friday and are expected to come down from Sunday.

Since mid-December last year, onion prices had hit the roof due to drastic decrease in supplies from the feeder states following un-seasonal rains.
