Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday condoled the passing away of mountaineering legend Sir Edmund Hillary, describing him as the one who drew people's attention to the grandeur of Mother Earth.

"He lived an exemplary life of seeking to attain the seemingly unattainable and drawing our attention to the grandeur of Mother Earth," Singh said in a message.

Noting that Hillary dedicated his life to the preservation of Himalayan heritage and inspired several generations of mountaineers worldwide, the Prime Minister said in his passing away "we must all seek inspiration from his sense of adventure, enterprise and his love of nature".
