Sources said their investigations into the murder of the second-year IT engineering student so far had revealed that he might have been very popular among the several female acquaintances that he is understood to have — but such wasn't the case when it came to their male friends.

"There is a strong possibility that someone, most probably from within his friends circle, who did not approve of his relationship with his current female friend and wanted to be with her instead, decided to bump him off," said a senior Delhi Police officer from the investigation team.

While going through his Facebook profile, which they believe holds the key to nabbing his, thus far, elusive killer, investigators have chanced upon a series of comments questioning the longevity of his current relationship.

The comments, which have been posted from a fake profile, also challenge Modi and his friends before proceeding to plain pleading aimed at "letting her go".

"Many of her classmates, as per initial investigations into the matter, seem to have disapproved of her relationship with Modi. This is another fresh angle from which the case is being probed," the officer said.

Meanwhile, based on a deeper analysis of his call records, investigators have ascertained that Modi was in conversation with one of his female friends, who lives in east Delhi, immediately after he left the DLF Promenade mall and minutes before he was attacked.

After questioning at least 30 people in the last 24 hours, the police claim to have received specific leads and are confident of cracking the case by the middle of the coming week.
