Power cuts continue in Delhi due to local snags

Rohini, Shalimar Bagh, Pitampura, Mangolpuri and Wazirpur in north and northwest experienced intermittent power cuts from Thursday evening. In east Delhi, areas such as Krishna Nagar, Mayur Vihar, Shahdra, Seelampur and Dilshad Garden reported cuts.

While snag in two Delhi Transco limited (DTL) 220KV transmission towers caused power cuts in north and northwestern parts of the city, local defects hit supply in east Delhi.

A damaged conductor hit supply from first transformer from 400 KV Bawana to 220 KV Shalimar Bagh. It was restored around Friday noon. Another 220 KV transformer transmitting between Bawana 400 KV to 220 KV Rohini was damaged in the thunderstorm on Thursday evening. It is expected to be restored by Saturday.

“There was no power supply in many societies of Sector 9, 13 and 14 in Rohini from 2am to 5.15am. The helpline and SMS facility centres of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) did not work. Power distribution companies should be removed and public sector should take over,” said Sanjiv Kumar, president Delhi residents’ front.

A TPDDL spokesperson said despite DTL supply not being available, alternate supplies were arranged by diverting power as part of contingency planning.

East Delhi residents have also asked why they have to power cuts if there is surplus power. “Residents of Krishna Nagar have been facing severe power outages since morning. Power supply was interrupted several times and people were unable to recharge the inverters,” said BS Vohra, of RWA Bhagidari.

The peak demand on Friday was 5142 MW.
