Residents cry foul over waste near park

A park in Vasant Vihar, meant to provide recreation to children and senior citizens, is slowly being encroached upon by a garbage dump.

The park, located on C-1 street, also poses a health hazard as garbage is strewn around, emitting stench.

Area residents said new garbage dumps should be set up or door-to-door collection should be initiated instead of expanding the garbage collection centre.

"The rear wall of the garbage collection area has been broken down. This has created a health hazard for residents. On Thursday, the boundary wall towards the park was also demolished. We have filed a complaint with the municipal body, the councillor and the local police. The work was stopped after that," said RK Vohra, secretary, Vasant Vihar Residence Welfare Association.

"Garbage collection areas should be located away from recreational parks," said Sajal Mathur, a resident.

Councillor of Ward no. 165 Radhe Shyam Sharma said the step had been taken to decongest the junction of Vasant Vihar and Basant Enclave, besides the wall had been demolished to deepen the dump by 10 feet.

"The work was initiated after a request from the Basant Enclave RWA. But it has stopped and won't begin till both the RWAs reach a consensus. The move will definitely solve traffic snarls at the spot," said Sharma.

Suresh Gupta, president, Basant Enclave RWA, said, "The space for a garbage dump was already in the park. The area has not been encroached upon. The move will benefit the residents of both localities," said Gupta.
