When she was taken to the police station, the woman from Moscow also alleged that the men physically assaulted her husband when he tried to save her, police said.

A counsellor from the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) was roped in and after a five-hour-long question-and-answer session, the allegations turned out to be fake.

The incident, however, sent the police into a tizzy as the matter involved a foreign national.

Within minutes of the call, senior police officers from north district, including the joint commissioner of police and DCP, arrived at the police station to make enquiries.

The matter became complicated when the Russian woman, who was staying in a rented accommodation in the Majnu Ka Tilla area, refused to undergo medical examination.

According to a police officer, the Russian woman claimed she was crossing the area with her husband when the group of men waylaid them and took her to a secluded place where they allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The couple, who are in India since February on tourist visas, shouted slogans against the Delhi police.

They said officers at the Civil Lines station were paying no heed to their complaint.

When taken to the police station, the woman made futile attempts to flee after seeing mediapersons.

The female police personnel had to run after her to stop her.

As the couple was speaking in Russian, the police officers used the services of a Russian language expert in Delhi University, Shiv Kumar.

They also took the help of Subhra Mehdi Ratta, a counsellor from Delhi Commission for Women.

After a five-hour-long counselling session, the woman admitted that her allegations were false.

In her written statement, she requested the police not to pursue the matter further.

Senior police officers heaved a sigh of relief after the couple left and the Russian embassy was informed of the incident.
