Sanjay Dutt to remain in jail, last option exhausted

Sanjay Dutt's last legal option against his conviction and sentence of five year jail term in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case ended today with the Supreme Court dismissing his curative petition.

Sanjay Dutt’s last legal option against his conviction and sentence of five-year jail term in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts was exhausted after the Supreme Court rejected his curative petition on Tuesday.

A four-judge bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam did not find merit in Dutt’s curative petition — the last procedural resort for a party to seek redressal against the SC’s verdict.

The apex court had on May 10 dismissed his plea for a review of its judgement.

Dutt is presently serving his jail term in the Yerawada jail in Pune after being moved from the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai.

A bench of justice P Sathasivam and justice B S Chauhan had on March 21 upheld Dutt’s conviction but had reduced his jail term from six years to five years.

A TADA court in Mumbai had sentenced him to imprisonment in 2006 under the Arms Act after finding him guilty of illegally possessing a pistol and a rifle.
