A bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi also sought the government's response on the plea to put in place a proper mechanism for disposal of used plastic bags.

The apex court passed the order on a PIL filed by a NGO, Karuna Society, seeking its direction to government to ban the use of plastic bags.

Observing that the issue raised by the petitioner should be given a serious thought, the bench agreed to hear the PIL and also issued notice to the Centre and plastic bag manufacturing companies.
