Stop influx of Bangladeshis: SC to Centre
The Supreme Court asked the Centre to take all possible steps to prevent infiltration of Bangladeshis into India, reports Satya Prakash.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre to take all possible steps to prevent infiltration of Bangladeshis into India. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan approved of the steps taken by the government to check illegal immigration from Bangladesh.
The court was responding to two PILs filed by All India Lawyers’ Forum for Civil Liberties and Image India Foundation in 1998 and 2004 , alleging that lakhs of Bangladeshis have infiltrated into India and have changed the demography of in northeastern states and Bihar.
The government told the court that it has set up 21 more tribunals in Assam, besides the 11 existing ones, for detection and deportation of illegal immigrants. The Centre also said that the first phase of fencing on the Indo-Bangla border had been completed the second phase was under implementation.
More BSF outposts were being set up along the border, the goverment informed the apex court.
