Failing to do well in his exams, the victim, Dipankar Sharma, was depressed, the police said. Sharma was pursuing a hotel management course from Mumbai.
His parents were away in Mumbai to attend a meeting with college authorities when he took the extreme step. Sharma had decided not to accompany them to Mumbai.
The incident was reported around 7.15 pm on Monday when Sharma locked himself in his room on the second floor, poured kerosene on himself and sit himself afire.
The family members, who were present in the house, rushed to save him after he cried for help. The door was forced open and Sharma was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital for treatment. The doctors said he had suffered 90 per cent burns and was in a critical state.
On Tuesday afternoon he succumbed to the injuries. His parents returned from Mumbai on Tuesday morning. Police ruled out any foul play in the case.
