The police are investigating whether outsiders instigated the rioters who rampaged on Asaf Ali Road on Thursday. The violence occurred after a sting operation alleged that a teacher of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Bulbulikhana was running a prostitution racket involving her students.

Eighteen people arrested for indulging in rioting and destroying public property were sent to judicial custody on Friday. The teacher, Uma Khurana, was also arrested after the police filed a First Information Report on the basis of the sting operation.
The police are investigating if the violence was planned and whether there was a specific motive behind it. Soon after the sting operation was aired on television, a mob gathered outside the school and beat up Khurana. The mob smashed vehicles parked on the road and torched a police vehicle.
Twenty-two people, including 12 policemen, were injured in the violence. The police have asked TV channels to give them the footage of the violence so they can identify those involved in instigating the mob. “We are still investigating how the mob was instigated into violence. If we get more information on the incident we will take necessary action,” said Alok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central District.
The school was closed after the incident and the police are maintaining a strict vigil in the area.
