‘The college canteen is depressing’

We normally attach a great deal of romance and nostalgia to the times spent at the college canteen. Second-year student of Delhi College of Art and Commerce Namita Mehra (name changed) is not one of them, reports Joyeeta Ghosh.

We normally attach a great deal of romance and nostalgia to the times spent at the college canteen. Second-year student of Delhi College of Art and Commerce Namita Mehra (name changed) is not one of them.

Mehra was attacked by a monkey outside the canteen. And it’s not just the ape attacks that’s upsetting.

“The canteen is so suffocating one can hardly sit inside, so we generally hang outside,” she said.

The monkey menace has been a constant problem in the college and due to lack of good infrastructure inside the canteen, students are forced to sit outside.

“It’s very dingy, the fans and the lights hardly work. The whole place looks very depressing,” she adds.

Sangita Kocchar (name changed), her classmate, said, “The whole area is shabby. Dogs move around the canteen and sometimes even lick our plates.”

Principal M.S. Rawat responded, “The renovation of the canteen has started already. We are planning to start with the repair work of the floor and the purchase committee has also ordered furniture for the canteen.”
