Toddler drowns in tub, mother cries murder

A one-year-old girl died after falling into a water tub in south Delhi’s Andheria Mor near Mehrauli on Sunday morning. The victim, who was sleeping on a bed, fell into the tub kept close to the bed.

The girl’s mother has alleged foul play. However, police said there was no substantial evidence to support her claim. No case has been registered in connection with the incident. The child has been identified as Tabassum.

A police officer, said the incident came to fore around 6 am when the victim’s mother went to the room and found her daughter in the water tub that filled by her husband Afroz the previous night. The child’s mother Tarannum immediately raised an alarm. The infant was rushed to a hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on admission.

“The baby was sleeping on her cot in the room while her parents slept outside. Tarannum has alleged that her daughter may have been drowned on purpose by someone from her family. She has also alleged that she had an argument with her in-laws on Friday when they had celebrated Tabassum’s birthday,” the officer said, adding they are waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death.
