Token vending machines are here; will reduce rush at Metro counters

Five machines have been placed at four busy stations: two at Rajiv Chowk station and one each at Vishwavidyalaya, Central Secretariat and Barakhamba Road stations.

The machines accept both coins and notes, and also return the balance amount.

Commuters can select their destination station on these machines by using the digital touchscreen, after which the machine shows the fare of the journey and asks for the number of tokens required.

The total fare is then calculated and displayed on the screen.

Commuters then insert the required money in the designated slots.

The machines have a digital map of the entire operational Metro system.

The maximum number of tokens dispensed at a time is six only.

“The commuters can use the machine without anyone’s assistance as all the information pertaining to its operation is displayed on the machine — in both English and Hindi,” said a DMRC spokesman.

The machine can accept currency coins of Re 1 and Rs 5 denominations and notes of Rs 10 and Rs 50 only.

The balance amount will be returned to the commuter in the denomination of Re 1 and Rs 5 coins.

The machine, however, does not accept soiled and damaged notes and fake currency notes (as per Reserve Bank of India standards) and these would be returned.

Delhi Metro plans to install such vending machines in all its upcoming Metro stations, in Phase-II.
