Terrorism was a persistent threat but his force would counter it at any cost even if it involved taking the fight to the terrorists, Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar has said.

“Encounters may be a thing of the past, but what if that’s the only alternative?” Kumar said Tuesday, a day after the arrest of suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder and ‘financier’ Fasih Mahmood.

"If a police party comes under heavy fire during an operation, we have no option but to fight back and we won’t shy away from doing so.” He, however, made it clear that the force won't go on firing spree every time it was out chasing terrorists.

“Terror is a threat that persists and will persist, but, at the same time, we are completely opposed to fake encounters.”

Investigating IM, he said, was a case in point. It still had a number of modules and many of the members were on the run. Investigations into such cases were a continuous process. “If the situation arises, we will do what is necessary to counter it, by any means necessary,” he said, adding Mahmood’s arrest should lead to more breakthroughs.
