Delhi traffic police has challaned a vehicle used by BJP leader Uma Bharti on Wednesday. This is reportedly a first-of-its-kind incident in which vehicle used by a national-level political leader has been prosecuted for ˜misusing' red beacon.

“The former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh uses a vehicle bearing licence plate number DL 1 YC 3099 which is fitted with a red beacon,” said a senior traffic police.

This vehicle came to the notice of the police after a user uploaded a photograph of the vehicle at MB Road, Saket on the traffic police's Facebook page.

“During an inquiry, it was found that the vehicle was hired by Madhya Pradesh Bhawan for the state's former chief minister,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

Uma Bharti could not be contacted for comment.

Police will also take necessary legal action against officials instrumental in red beacons being used unauthorisedly.

Initiating a drive in June this year against misuse of red beacons, Delhi Police have already prosecuted over 300 vehicles that include several MPs, senior state level political leaders and senior government functionaries of the ranks of DIG, IG, and joint secretary, among others.

A few months ago, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had carried out a massive crackdown on city legislators and others who used red beacons on their official cars in contravention of rules. “The police must act against anybody and everybody who uses red beacons over their cars,” Dikshit had said.
