Mining is not sustainable, still, it has to be done to the extent we need minerals. But a Rs 16,000 crore loot and illegal stripping of the earth is pure theft from the public, the country and the planet. In this era of climate change, of mass environmental movements and rapidly deteriorating eco-systems, no political party can sit mum on such issues, more so when it’s own cadre is named. Every MP who decided to support the CM is a head count for political brazenness about stealing public resources. The BJP must announce how it intends to punish the culprits, restore the land, pay for what it has stolen.

React /Act-but Fast
Across the world, consumer and environmental groups — more than government— monitor chemical contamination, warning us against pesticide contaminated beverages, toxic baby products and leaded paints. In developing countries, such groups play a key role in safeguarding public health because they often have access to excellent laboratories and outstanding scientists. Take the case of Ecowaste Coalition, in the Philippines. Recently, the Coalition found several toxic chemicals in children’s toys. Their Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory almost at once. In India, such data is cross-verified, debated and then, sometimes, used for legislation. There is a case for engaging with data, but none for delayed safeguards within a time frame in the public interest. We all know this in India we are all still eating possibly contaminated vegetables despite several exposes.
