University council clears 28 courses

This includes courses in English, botany, chemistry, physics, zoology, biochemistry, Sanskrit, Hindi, philosophy and psychology. It was also decided that the erstwhile BA (honours) Psychology course will now be called B Tech in psychological sciences.

The meeting was adjourned after going on for 12 hours and will be continued on Wednesday. There are more than 50 courses that the council is considering for approval. This excludes the courses in sociology and history.

While the sociology department is yet to make its syllabus under the four-year system, the history department submitted its syllabus to the faculty two days ago. “The history committee of courses has submitted its syllabus but this was not included in the meeting’s agenda as it was sent out earlier,” said council member Umesh Rai.

The council recorded seven dissent notes in total. Of these, six were on the structure of the four-year programme and the syllabi. One was on the anthropology syllabus. The total attendance of the meeting was 92 members. The academic council meeting came after a marathon standing committee meeting that lasted 28 hours over two days.The suggestions made by the standing committee with regard to the syllabi were incorporated by the heads of the departments on Monday. This was then put up before the council.

Six teachers dissented against the new structure at the beginning of the meeting itself to which council members, department heads and some other members objected to saying that the meeting’s agenda was syllabi and not the structure. The four-year structure was passed in the council’s meeting in December 2012.
