According to Delhi Police, initial investigations have revealed that ammonium nitrate was used in the bomb. Uttar Pradesh ATS who started its investigations soon after the blast believe that an illegal arms supplier in western Uttar Pradesh provided the ammonium nitrate and other explosives that were used to make the bomb. They have dispatched teams to different areas such as Meerut, Moradabad and Aligarh.

They even have reasons to believe that it might not be a terror related act but they are not ruling out its possibility. The police have recovered the timer in which the bomb was set to go off between 11:30 am and noon.

"We believe that one illegal arms supplier has provided the assailants with the materials for the bomb. Teams have been sent to various areas and investigations are being carried out," said a senior UP Police officer on the condition of anonymity.

"There has not been much movement of Indian Mujahideen in recent times. Even the attack itself lacks precision and most importantly the bomb was crude, poorly assembled and had traces of ammonium nitrate,” he added.
