UP polls: Cong names eight nominees

Senior leaders Vedpal Singh Srinet and Rana Vijay Rajbhar are among eight candidates named by Congress for the seventh phase of assembly polls in UP.

Senior leaders Vedpal Singh Srinet and Rana Vijay Rajbhar are among eight candidates named on Wednesday by Congress for the seventh phase of assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

Srinet has been fielded from Chillupar Assembly seat in district Gorakhpur and would be taking on all powerful Harishankar Tiwari, an independent and sitting Minister in the Maulayam Singh government.

Srinet has been nominated replacing Jaybir Singh, whose candidature was announced by the party earlier, CWC member Oscar Fernandes said in a statement.

Rajbhar has been nominated from Ghosi assembly seat, which falls under Ghosi Lok Sabha seat once represented by senior Congress leader Kalpnath Rai.

Party has also nominated Ramayan Yadav from Natthupur replacing its earlier candidate Devender Singh Chuhan. Others who figue in the list included Ashok Rajbhar (Katehri), Ram Nath Kushwaha (Barhaj), Vipin Pathak (Gopalpur), Raj Bali (Azamgarh) and Advocate Gopal Nishad (Mau).
