Woman, six-year-old son stabbed to death

When 36-year-old Pawan Nangia walked back home at 2.45 a.m. on Friday from an office party, he had no idea his world will fall apart around him within seconds. His wife, Anuradha (34), and six-year-old son, Cherish, had been brutally stabbed to death at their house.

“The incident was reported from Pawan Nangia’s house in west Patel Nagar’s J block at 3 a.m.,” said Jaspal Singh, DCP (central). According to the police, Nangia, a property dealer by profession, was at a party at his office located at J-27 since early evening. “When he returned home, he found Anuradha lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen and Cherish lying face-down in the adjacent storeroom,” said a senior police officer from the investigation team.

The officer said Anuradha’s throat had been slit and she was stabbed multiple times in the chest and back. Cherish seemed to have been strangled with a wire before being stabbed in the chest and back.

“It seems robbery was not the motive as all the cash and valuables, including the jewellery that Anuradha was wearing, are accounted for. Personal enmity appears to be the most plausible intent of the perpetrator,” the officer said.

According to the police, Anuradha might have known the killers. “The assailants were known to both victims. Two used glasses containing water, which Anuradha must have offered to the assailants before they turned on her, and the fact that the door of the main entrance to the house was ajar when Nangia returned, point to this inference,” said the officer.

According to her neighbours, the last time they saw Anuradha was around late evening on Thursday.

“I was coming back from my mother's house when I saw her buying vegetables from the local vendor near the colony park around 7.30 p.m.,” said Sudha Singhania, one of the Nangias' neighbours. Another neighbour of the family said that one of Nangia's rivals might be involved in the crime.

The police said they were investigating the case form all plausible angles.

“We have registered a case at the Patel Nagar police station and are investigating the case from all angles,” DCP Singh said.
