Young couple tries suicide; both critical

A youth and his girlfriend were battling for life at a hospital after they tried to immolate themselves following opposition from their families to their marriage, police said here on Thursday.

Sachin, 25, and Sarita, 19, (both names changed) set themselves ablaze in Habbatpur area here after their families opposed to their marriage, SP JK Shahi said. The couple met last evening at the house of the boy's relative in Habbatpur, where they set themselves afire, Shahi said.

They were rushed to the hospital with serious burn injuries, but later, as their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to GTB Hospital in Delhi. Both are stated to be critical.
