Thousands of demonstrators were holding a protest against the state government demanding permanent jobs.

The protest turned violent when they began to pelt stones at the police who in turn used water cannons and resorted to lathi charge, leaving several protesters injured. The protesters also torched a police jeep and a few two-wheelers.

IG Lucknow zone Zaki Ahmad has asked SSP Rajesh Pandey to submit a report explaining how the protesters were allowed to gather outside the Vidhan Sabha despite previous warning.

The protest left commuters and students returning from nearby schools stranded for several hours.
