From starring in blockbusters such as Lagaan (2001), to doing fun films like Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! (2005), Suhasini Mulay has quite a lot of variety in her filmography. She entered Hindi films late in her career, because she had other things keeping her busy.

Actor Suhasini Mulay has starred in acclaimed films such as Hu Tu Tu and Lagaan.

“I have spent 26 years of my life making documentaries such as An Indian Story,Bhopal - Beyond Genocide, Chithi and Official Art Form, all of which won National Awards. People don’t talk about those, but documentaries have a lot of job satisfaction,” she says.

However, the 70-year-old adds this in the same breath, that one can’t earn a livelihood by way of docus. “It adds nothing in the bank. I turned 40, and needed something in the bank. I thought ‘ab kya karein?’ I met Gulzar ji and he offered me Hu Tu Tu, and then Lagaan happened. Life was telling me to go that way and jump ship, so I did,” says Mulay, who also won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Hu Tu Tu.

Acclaimed films such as Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Page 3 (2005) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008) followed, but what got to the actor was the fact that many films required her to play positive characters, thus typecasting her.

This is why Mulay decided to change the perception around her by taking up web project, which offered her a chance to play against stereotype. “I am doing a web show next with Madhuri Dixit Nene, and I play the nasty mother. I am enjoying it. I always get goody goody two shoes roles, I got fed up of that. I am not goody goody two shoes at all. It’s nice to be nasty,” she says with a laugh.
