The Kashmir Files, starring actor Anupam Kher, opened in theatres on Friday amid positive reviews. The film reportedly collected around ₹3.55 crore on its first day. The Kashmir Files revolves around the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990. Taking to Twitter, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, "#TheKashmirFiles springs a biggg surprise on Day 1… Despite limited showcasing [630+ screens], the film goes from strength to strength during the course of the day… Evening and night shows extraordinary… soolid growth on Day 2 and 3 is a surety… Fri ₹3.55 cr. #India biz."
The Hindustan Times review read, "Vivek Agnihotri’s research about the tragedy shows in every scene in the film even though the nearly three-hour length of the film doesn't do it any favours. The non-linear screenplay doesn’t let you get immersed in any one character’s story. Just when you are feeling terrible for what happened to Pushkar and his family, Krishna’s quest to find the truth about his family’s massacre takes over and you immediately switch to present-day. Krishna’s journey and the story of finding the truth about what happened to his family needed more conviction and clarity."
In the film, Anupam Kher essays the role of Pushkar Nath Pandit. Bhasha Sumbli plays his daughter-in-law, Sharda Pandit, whose sons--Shiva and Krishna--meet different fates in the aftermaths of the tragedy. Chinmay plays Farooq Malik Bitta a terrorist and the brains behind the exodus.
The Kashmir Files is produced by Zee Studios and Tej Narayan Agarwal, Abhishek Agarwal, Pallavi Joshi, and Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri. The film was earlier slated to release in January but got delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
