Siddharth has been on a mission to free the world of social networking from its staid blue and white interface. Giving his rainbow community a fresh avenue, the software engineer, along with his gang of eight, has recently launched a social networking website, www.desiboys.in, exclusively designed for gay men.
The week-old online venture already boasts of over 50 members. “There has been no effort to give the Indian gay community worldwide a trusted environment to explore opportunities,” says Siddharth, adding, “Websites like Facebook or MySpace offer only the most polar gender and sexual preference identifiers. One’s friend list might also comprise family, and that sometimes isn’t conducive to sharing real stories,” feels the 32-year-old.
The site caters to only one section of the queer community, and Siddarth confesses they haven’t found a space for women yet, saying, “We’ve been researching for over four months now and we realised gay men and lesbians have different sets of needs from a networking site.” But he promises that a desigirls.in is not far away.
With an assorted group of bankers, artists and designers, Siddharth and his team are currently working on a mobile version and a chat module for their online venture.
And while single men looking for dates comprise most of the early signees, Siddharth assures that the site offers more. “It’s a Facebook meets LinkedIn meets Gay.com that aims to help gay men figure out where to go, what to do and who to meet,” he says, adding, “We have a strict policy against pornography and abusive language.”
