It's Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar's birthday today. But the filmmaker, who hosted a much talked about, star-studded bash last year, plans a quiet birthday this time around.

How will you celebrate your birthday this year?
Unlike last year, there is no big bash. The entire focus right now is on completing and meeting the last minute deadlines of (my production)Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. So this year, let me eat gracefully at home (laughs). In fact, I am going to watch the first cut of YJHD on my birthday. So that’s my special gift. Otherwise, it’s time to relax.

Are you a big birthday party person?
I never shy away from the fact that I love birthdays — mine and others too. And yes, I love celebrating birthdays because they’re special for everyone — after all, it’s the day when you were born.

What's the best birthday gift you have ever received?
I love to give and receive presents but I honestly believe that materialistic things fade away with time. Memories always stay. For example, regardless of my birthdays, I remember receiving letters from my fans and well-wishers. For instance, I remember writing a letter to Mr Bachchan when he had gotten injured while shooting for Coolie (1983). He replied as well.

Any special gift that you still keep with you?
Whatever I am today, is because of my father (late Yash Johar). I am simply taking his ideals and dreams forward at my film production company. And so I couldn't have asked for a better gift.

Do you like giving or taking gifts on birthdays?
Absolutely. In fact, I love giving them away more than taking them. For some reason, it makes me happy. I am all for birthdays and presents. I feel that such occasions should always be celebrated with fervour.
