The singer, who had already been dealing with the deaths of several close friends, revealed that he felt helpless when he heard the news. He said, “There's nothing you can do about it. You feel so powerless.”
According to a Rolling Stone cover story, Cherry was diagnosed with a tumor while six months pregnant with their daughter Jupiter. In March of 2022, Ed made a candid admission, stating that he had experienced feelings of not wanting to live anymore and stated, “And I have had that throughout my life.… You're under the waves drowning. You're just sort of in this thing. And you can't get out of it.”
Ed's breakthrough came in 2011 with the release of his debut album +. The album was a commercial and critical success, featuring hit singles such as The A Team and Lego House. He followed up with his second album x in 2014, which featured the chart-topping singles Sing and Thinking Out Loud.
