For the past few days, Priyanka Chopra had put all her professional assignments on hold to be with her ailing father, Dr Ashok Chopra. On Monday (June 10), he succumbed to cancer at the city’s Kokilaben Ambani Hospital, with PC and her family — including his wife Madhu, son Siddharth and niece Parineeti — by his side.

“Mr Chopra was admitted to the hospital a few days ago in a critical condition. He passed away at around 12 noon on Monday,” says a family member. He was first diagnosed with cancer in 2005, when Priyanka was working on Bluffmaster (2005). Earlier this year, he and his wife, Madhu, had even accompanied Priyanka to a film award ceremony in Vancouver, Canada. Chopra was known for his singing talent, and in fact, he motivated his daughter to take up singing professionally too.

“From the industry, Uday Chopra and Tarun (Mansukhani, director) were visiting her and Mr Chopra regularly for the past few days,” adds the family friend. On Monday, till the time of going to the press, director Karan Johar was among those who visited PC at the hospital.

Priyanka had put all her projects — including an upcoming biopic on boxer Mary Kom — on hold when her father was admitted to the hospital about 15 days ago. In the past few days, she had spent all her time praying for her father’s recovery and had even organised Mahamrityunjay puja at her home.

The funeral was held at 6 pm yesterday (June 10). Just before it, actor Shahid Kapoor visited PC’s house.
