Sitarist Anoushka Shankar, 29, tied the knot with British filmmaker Joe Wright in London on September 26. She is expecting her first baby with him. Says the artiste, “The ceremony seems to have deepened something between us. It was really precious and beautiful.”
Shankar wore a blue lehenga during the wedding and later changed into a Ritu Kumar lehenga for the evening party. Sister Norah Jones hosted her mehendi ceremony. “Norah walked me out hand in hand for the wedding ceremony. She also sang at the performance we had arranged, as part of the party. I felt more happy than ever to have a sister, and drew much strength and love from our relationship,” says Shankar.
Shankar, who has been dating Wright for a while now, received news of her pregnancy with excitement and decided to tie the knot immediately after the news broke. Totally unexpected “I found out that I was pregnant a day after I did a really huge show with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was premiering my father’s new symphony. The next day we had a birthday party for my father and I had been practicing a surprise dance number for him. I managed to go and dance for my father that night, even though my head was totally spinning with the news,” says a beaming Shankar. Shankar says her father, Ravi Shankar, was delighted at the news of becoming a grandfather. “My parents are incredibly overjoyed to become grandparents. They've both been wonderful. I love seeing this new side of them,” she says.
Currently, Wright is nursing the soon-to-be mother. Shankar says, “Joe is more protective now in a lot of ways, and it's a lovely feeling. He knows I take good care with my food and exercise and so on. But yes, he does have to keep reminding me to slow down and get enough rest!” She adds that the couple is looking forward to bringing home a healthy, happy child soon and have a few names in mind but will wait until the baby's born to choose the final name. “After all, it has to fit the little personality,” she adds.
