Aish, Bips and Lara wear the same dress!

Fashion blunder? Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Lara Dutta don the same Dior dress in three different magazines. Read on for scoop on this and more fashion faux-pas.
With her husband clutching her passionately, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan strikes a stunning pose in a Gucci dress in this month’s issue of
Vogue
magazine. There’s just one problem. The same dress, from Gucci’s latest collection, was worn by actress Lara Dutta on the cover of
Marie Claire
in May, and by Bipasha Basu in
Verve
.
Watch out
Magazine editors suggest the clothing brand (in this case Gucci) ought to have avoided the blunder. “Brands involved should let magazines know which other magazines they are sending the press pieces to,” says Neena Haridas, managing editor,
Marie Claire
.
“A cover look should be restricted to one magazine in any one country. It is the brand’s responsibility to inform the magazine if the piece has been used for any other cover shoot and also the magazine’s responsibility to check. Luckily we were on the forefront with this Gucci dress,” says Nisha Jhangiani, fashion director,
Verve
.
Deja vu

Although it may be the first time three magazines are involved in such an instance, the faux pas is not new. In June, Ash featured in
Femina
in a Versace gown, which Jacqueline Fernandes also wore on the cover of
Vogue
the same month. Last year, Twinkle Khanna and Shilpa Shetty ended up on the cover of two fashion glossies in the same Dior gown.
Meanwhile, the debate about whether it is okay for different actresses to flaunt the same dress in magazines rages on. “It is best avoided in case of celebrities. When people see a celebrity in a certain outfit in a magazine, they identify that outfit with that particular celeb,” says fashion photographer Dabboo Ratnani.
“Stars, themselves, are very conscious. But, stylists have to ensure the dress they pick is not borrowed or sent to another publication,” says Arati Thapa, Editor,
AsiaSpa India
. “It is always good to be the first magazine to present a look, but if a look is strong, it will get repeated,” says Sujata Assomull, editor
Harper’s Bazaar
India.
Meanwhile, netizens are ripping apart the ‘blunder’ as well. “Looks like the recession hit hard,” posted Arj on a fashion blog. “Talk about an embarrassing situation,” posted Nita03 on Twitter.
