Just re-do it
Wondering what to wear on New Year? Dhvani Merchant on how to recycle your clothes and still look like million bucks.fashion and trends Updated: Dec 31, 2007 12:24 IST
Spent all of your last month’s salary on a party in Goa? Overshooting your budget for New Year’s outfit? Don’t worry, you can still dazzle this New Year.
The little black dress is still in. You can also simply dye an old dress new and save on a few bucks.
Darker colours are still in vogue so stick to the blacks and blues. Cut a long dress short or try adding something to a dress.
Says designer Meghana K, “Lace is really in, especially in gold. Try a lace patch on one area of the dress, like the hem or the sleeves.” <b1>
Metallics and shimmer are still in, but don’t overdo it. Opt for either shoes inmetallic colours or a dress. ‘Matching-Matching’ is out.
Adds designer Arshiya Fakih of Araiya, “Design elements are really strong for this season. One idea that always works is cutting up stuff. The unfinished look is in too, so just leave it be”
The more radical and different it is, the cooler it looks. The layered look is very in. Try teaming a formal black shirt with a sequinned singlet or top. Or you can always do the tried-and-tested leggings and skirt. Skin show is out.
Says Arshiya, “It’s all about being subtle. Leaving something to imagination is sexier than baring it all.” So please, skip plunging necklines. You can always do the old-saree-zari-border meets not-so-new black dress. Cut up a zari border, attach it somewhere on the dress. But this can backfire, so make sure the colours of the border and the dressmatch.
Borrow your boyfriend/brother’s black shirt, tie it or belt it at the waist with a nice chunky metallic belt, diamonte shoes and some leggings with the lace at the bottom for some old world charm and you will be the belle of the ball.
For the men
As for the men, not much you can do as far as the recycling bit is concerned but you guys still will rock the party in a nice light weight jacket, tee and jeans if you’re going to be somewhere outside.
Again, experiment with colours, ties, shoes, skinny jeans (if you have the body for it) or even try the layered look. Go for funky prints on T’s and contrasting colour combos.
All in all, be confident and rock the party.
