Regional Mehendi
There are a number of regional Mehendi designs that you get to see in Delhi, such as Marwari, Bombay style, Delhi style, Jaipuri, Bengali and more. While the Bombay style is more of minute details with cut work, the Delhi style is done with designs of peacocks with ambi motifs.

Milan Mehendi Art, South Ex.
This place specialises in regional Mehendi, especially Marwari style. “In the recent past, the designs of Dulha Dulhan, Hanuman, Radha-Krishna have become very famous. People really want these designs,” says Vishal Jain of Milan. The starting rate for a Mehendi design on one hand is R100 and can go up to R2,000 depending on the designs and availability.

Raj Kumar Mehendi Wala, Shalimar Bagh
This is one of the most crowded places during the Karva Chauth week. Mehendi walas here apply two or three different regional styles in one design. So, you have a mix of Marwari, Bombay and Jaipuri designs on your hand. They also offer other designs like flowers and Gods, and can experiment according to the customer’s demand. The rates start at R50 and can go up to R500.

Colourful mehendi

Colourful Mehendi is one of the latest additions to the city’s mehendi options. These days, it’s just not green, orange and black, but a whole new range of colours that you can add to your Mehendi design.

Jaipuri Mehandi Art, Preet Vihar
Come here if you want to go extremely experimental with your Mehendi design. You can even get a design that matches with your outfit. “We first apply the henna in the regular way in different styles and shapes and then add colours with nail paints,” says Ranveer Kashyap of Jaipuri Mehandi Art. Besides this, they also do tattoos in Jaipuri style and nail art matching with your Mehendi. The rates for such designs start at R200.

The starting rate here during Karva Chauth is R200 per hand. It can go up to R500 as per the design and style. Try their black dye Mehendi that starts at R600 and is done in a double shade with a combination of henna and black dye. “Our black dye Mehendi will remain on your hands for at least a month,” says Satprakash from the shop.

You can also add some shimmer to your mehendi with the glitter technique. The mehendi is embossed with glitter and even fake crystals sometimes. While the life of the glitter used is very less, a lot of people still go for it, specially during Karva Chauth.

Silver, golden and copper - try out these colours in your mehendi design. “There is a lot of craze for these designs,” says Ajeet. “We have a lot of people coming in for this,” adds Ajeet. They also do stone embellishments on your Mehendi that will complement your dress. And all this takes just half an hour. Prices start at R100 and can go up to R5,000.

Here, they give you the option of shimmery colours in red, yellow and more with your Mehendi. After applying the regular design, which is usually the Bombay style of Mehendi with minute detailing, they add some sparkles. “The sparkles remain only till the time you don’t wash your hands,” says Mahinder Tiwari, the shop’s owner. The starting rate is R500.

If you don’t want to go for designs on your palms, then you can try out henna tattoos on your arms, back and even stomach. Such tattoos last for seven to 10 days.

Talwar Singh Mehandi wala, South Ex
This place specialises in regional mehendi designs such as Marwari, Punjabi and Gujarati. But what you can actually try out here is the Mehendi tattoos, which can be made in different shapes and sizes. “A lot of young girls come to us and want tattoos. So, we have developed various styles and designs,” says Talwar Singh. The rate for these tattoos start at R50. A normal design here would cost between R50-R100, Arabic from R500 to R1,000 and other designs from R400 to R700.

They design henna tattoos on the arms and the back. Some of the best tattoo designs offered here are Arabic tattoos that are embellished with glitters and stone bindis. “We can do any imitation in the form of a tattoo. It depends on what our customers want,” says Kalam. A normal-sized tattoo of two inches would cost about R100 and can go up to R400.

Go Bollywood this Karva Chauth, as Deepa Sharma, famous for doing mehendi for Bollywood actors such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kangana Ranaut, is coming to Delhi. She has a special Karva Chauth theme for women. Besides this, she will also be doing Arabic mehendi, as well as her speciality, that is, Rose mehendi, where different styles and designs of roses are made on the hand and then connected very artistically.
