Beer yoga is a fusion fitness form combining the drink with the exercise regimen.

Anything can be made hipster and cool by adding beer to the mix. Even yoga. So, if you’re struggling to get out of your bed in the morning, a chilled bottle of beer may be the motivation you need. At least that was the idea behind this new-age fitness trend.

Beer yoga is a fun way of experiencing the goodness of yoga. This is for people who are otherwise shy of trying out asanas, but won’t mind it if there’s beer to bring them in their comfort zone,” says Arth Jain, founder, Binge — a discovery and recommendation platform. Jain, along with Anushka Chaturvedi, a self-trained yogi, is organising a beer yoga session in Mumbai this weekend.

Beer yoga originated in Nevada in 2014 as part of the Burning Man festival and slowly spread to Australia, Germany, UK and now, India. However, it became big in Germany (birthplace of beer), where it was termed as Bieryoga.

Over the last couple of months, this fusion fitness form has grown in popularity in metros like Mumbai and Delhi. Reluctant millennials are being lured to try yoga with the promise of a couple of pints. Apart from the fun element of beer, this form of yoga is merely a fitness fad with a certain novelty value, just like voga (vogue + yoga) and loga (laughter + yoga).

In Delhi, similar sessions were held at pubs such as Raasta and Rabbit Hole. In Mumbai, a bunch of sessions will be held this weekend (also coinciding with International Beer Day) at Café Zoe in Lower Parel, Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden in Bandra and Havana in Colaba . The hour-long session starts with some easy asanas that also involve balancing a bottle of beer and ends with participants feeling refreshed.

What’s the big fuss you ask? It’s just a regular yoga class with a bottle of beer to take sips from. “Both beer and yoga have positive effects on the body and mind. The practice of beer yoga combines the mindfulness of yoga and fun of drinking beer,” adds Jain. So, should you sign up? Why not? Everything is more fun when there’s beer involved.

Here’s where you can try it:

At: Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden, Hill Road, Bandra, Mumbai.

On: August 6, Sunday
At: Café Zoe, Mathuradas Mill, Lower Parel, Mumbai.
