Pep Guardiola wants Leroy Sane to stay in Manchester City
Pep Guardiola also acknowledged the fact that players want to play and they cannot afford not to play for a long period.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola does not want Leroy Sane to leave the club saying they want to extend his contract.
“We are one-and-a-half years trying to sign his [new] contract. We want him. If you want to extend his contract, it’s because you want him. You’re not going to extend his contract because you don’t want him,” Goal.com quoted Guardiola, as saying.
Sane has made 46 appearances across all the competitions and scored 16 goals and given out 10 league assists. However, Sane has to compete with Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva to secure his spot in the squad, which Guardiola feels is not easy.
“He’s competing with Sterling and Bernardo Silva. It’s not easy. If you want to play in for competitions for the quadruple we need Leroy, Sterling, Riyad [Mahrez], Bernardo, we can’t compete for the quadruple with just two wingers,” he said.
“They have to fight each other and play the best as possible to convince me to put them in the line-up,” Guardiola added.
Guardiola also acknowledged the fact that players want to play and they cannot afford not to play for a long period.
“They accept not playing for a period but when the period is long it’s normal that they want to play more,” Guardiola said.
“I understand completely that when players don’t play regularly they want to play more or that they’re completely happy when they play regularly and their lives are really sad when they don’t,” he added.
